W-8BEN for YouTube creators: fill the AdSense tax form right
Every creator outside the United States submits a W-8BEN in AdSense before the first payment. Done right, it means withholding only on your US-viewer earnings, at your country's treaty rate. Done wrong or not at all, it means 24% off everything. Here is each field, the treaty claim, and where 28 countries stand.

What withholding means
24%, 30% or the treaty rate
Three outcomes, decided by one form. The withholding only ever touches earnings from US viewers once a form is in.
| Situation | What is withheld | On which earnings |
|---|---|---|
| No tax form submitted (individual) | 24% | Worldwide YouTube earnings — every country's viewers |
| W-8BEN, country with no US treaty | 30% | US-viewer earnings only |
| W-8BEN with a treaty claim | Treaty rate (0–30%) | US-viewer earnings only; Google's example: India at 15% |
| W-8BEN-E (company outside the US) | 30% or treaty rate | US-viewer earnings only |
| W-9 (US person) | None (unless backup withholding) | Reported on an annual information return above the IRS threshold |

Field by field
The form, in AdSense's order
Google's guided flow asks these in sequence. Have your ID, your tax number and your bank's printed name ready.
- 1
Account type and US status
Individual for a person; Non-individual/entity for a company. US citizen or resident: No. This selects W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E.
- 2
Name of individual
Your legal name exactly as on your government ID and your bank account. A mismatch here causes an identity hold later.
- 3
Country of citizenship
Your nationality. Dual nationals choose the country of the ID they will upload.
- 4
Foreign TIN
Your own country's tax number (PAN, NTN, TIN, NPWP, CPF, NIF, Ghana Card and so on). Required to claim a treaty; a US TIN is not needed.
- 5
Permanent residence address
Where you are tax resident. It should match the AdSense payment address; a PO box is not accepted for residence.
- 6
Tax treaty claim
If your country has a treaty, tick the claim, select the country, and apply the rate to the income types the tool lists. The tool shows the resulting percentage; keep a screenshot.
- 7
Certification and signature
Type your name, confirm you are the beneficial owner, submit. AdSense shows the form status under Manage settings within a day.
Two things people miss. The form is valid for three years from the end of the year you sign it, and an expired form means 24% on everything until renewed. And the withholding is on US-viewer earnings only, so the Channel Analyzer audience report tells you how much is actually at stake: a channel with 5% US viewers loses far less to a missing treaty claim than one with 40%.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Rules change; confirm with a local accountant.
FAQ
Questions creators ask
What is the W-8BEN and why does YouTube ask for it?
The W-8BEN is a US tax form that tells Google you are not a US person and, if your country has a tax treaty with the United States, which treaty rate applies to your earnings from US viewers. Google is required to collect it from every creator earning through AdSense for YouTube. Without any form, 24% backup withholding applies to an individual's worldwide YouTube earnings.
How much tax does YouTube withhold without a W-8BEN?
For an individual with no tax form on file, 24% of total worldwide earnings is withheld. With a valid W-8BEN, withholding applies only to the portion of earnings from viewers in the United States: 30% if your country has no tax treaty with the US, or the reduced treaty rate if it does. Earnings from viewers outside the US are not withheld at all once the form is in.
Which YouTube earnings are subject to US withholding?
Only earnings from viewers in the United States: ad views, YouTube Premium revenue, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and channel memberships from US viewers. A channel whose audience is mostly in India, Nigeria or Brazil has a small US share, so the withholding is small in absolute terms; a channel with a large US audience should claim its treaty rate carefully.
Does my country have a tax treaty with the US?
Google's help page uses India as its example, with the treaty reducing the rate on US-viewer earnings to 15%. Countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Ireland, South Africa, Mexico, Turkey, Indonesia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Egypt and New Zealand have treaties; Nigeria, Pakistan, Kenya, Ghana, Brazil, Vietnam, Singapore, the UAE and Saudi Arabia do not. The AdSense tax tool shows the exact rate when you claim.
Do I need a US tax ID to fill the W-8BEN?
No. You use your own country's tax identification number (PAN in India, TIN or Ghana Card number in Ghana, NIF, NPWP and so on) in the foreign TIN field; a US TIN is optional and most creators leave it blank. The form asks for your legal name, country of citizenship, permanent residence address, foreign tax ID, treaty claim and a signature; Google's guided flow in AdSense selects the right form and fields.
How often do I need to renew the W-8BEN?
A W-8BEN is generally valid for three years from the end of the year you sign it, and AdSense emails you before it expires. You must also resubmit if your address, name or tax residency changes. An expired form drops you back to 24% backup withholding on worldwide earnings until a new one is in, so put the expiry date in your calendar when you submit.
What if I run my channel through a company?
A company outside the US submits a W-8BEN-E instead, with the company's legal name, country of incorporation and tax ID, and the treaty claim under the company's residence. The AdSense payee must then be the company, and the bank account in the company's name. A US company or US person submits a W-9 with an EIN or SSN; US withholding does not apply to US persons, but backup withholding does if no form is filed.
