How to start a YouTube channel in Japan
Set the channel up for Japanese search from day one
Open the channel on a Google account you control, set Japan as the country in Studio, verify with a Japanese mobile number, decide between Japanese and English before the name, and treat copyright as the first rule of the channel.
Japanese or English, decided before the name
Japanese-language titles reach the domestic audience; English content made in Japan reaches tourists and overseas viewers at higher RPM. Pick one; a name in kanji or katakana signals the first, a romaji name the second.
Set the channel country to Japan
Studio → Settings → Channel → Basic info → Country of residence. This is what YouTube checks against the availability lists and what AdSense expects the payment address to match.
2-Step Verification and advanced features
Turn on 2-Step Verification on the Google account, then verify the channel with a Japanese mobile number to get advanced features such as longer uploads and custom thumbnails.
A handle that works on X
Japanese creators cross-post heavily on X; use the same short handle on both so viewers find the channel from a post.
Description in the words viewers search
Write it with the phrases people type in kanji and katakana ("ラーメン 東京 おすすめ", "確定申告 やり方"), name the upload day, and add a business email for brand deals.
First five videos as one series
Five videos on one promise tell YouTube exactly who to show you to. Mixing vlogs, games and food in week one tells it nothing.
Copyright first
Anime clips, music and TV footage are claimed within hours in Japan and rights holders are strict. Use the YouTube Audio Library and your own footage from the first upload.
Upload defaults
Set video language to Japanese (or English), caption language, and the location. Default to public and schedule for 7–10 pm JST.
Study a channel in your niche with the Channel Analyzer before you pick a name, then draft your first titles with the Video Title Generator. Full setup walkthrough: how to start a YouTube channel.
Best YouTube niche in Japan
Niches that grow and pay for Japanese audiences
The niches growing in Japan in 2026 are daily vlogs, game commentary (jikkyo), ramen and food, Japan travel in both languages, DIY, business and economy, VTuber-style content, beauty, kids education and anime commentary with strict copyright handling. Earning potential is qualitative and reflects advertiser demand for each topic.
Daily vlogs
Medium earning potentialRoutine, apartment and seasonal life content has a loyal domestic audience and travels abroad with English captions.
Game commentary (jikkyo)
Low earning potentialA long-established Japanese format; archived live streams count as watch hours.
Ramen and food
Medium earning potentialFood searches are constant and Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka each have their own angles; tourists search the same shops in English.
Japan travel
High earning potentialEnglish travel content made in Japan reaches overseas viewers at high RPM; Japanese travel content reaches a loyal domestic audience.
DIY
Medium earning potentialHome and craft content with a strong domestic audience and home-brand advertisers.
Business and economy
High earning potentialInvesting (NISA, iDeCo), side income and economy explainers draw the highest-paying advertisers in Japan.
VTuber-style content
Medium earning potentialAvatar-based channels with strong Super Chat behaviour; production is heavier but the audience is loyal.
Beauty
Medium earning potentialK-beauty and Japanese skincare with strong affiliate and brand-deal demand.
Kids education
Low earning potentialHiragana, counting and English-for-children content has steady demand and long sessions.
Anime commentary
Low earning potentialA huge audience, but clips are claimed fast; commentary with still images or your own footage is the only safe format.
Earning potential is qualitative (Low / Medium / High) and reflects advertiser demand and audience country, not a figure any channel will earn.
Saturated locally: anime clip compilations, music reuploads, generic game highlights and reaction channels without commentary. Rights holders claim within hours, and what remains is interchangeable.
Low local competition: plain-Japanese explainers of Japanese systems (確定申告, 年金, 保険), English explainers of life in Japan for foreigners (visas, apartments, banking), regional travel outside Tokyo and Kyoto, and trade skills with a camera on the work.
Local audience or global audience? Japanese-language content reaches a large, loyal domestic audience at mid-range RPM. English content made in Japan reaches the US, UK, Australia and Singapore at high RPM and faces less competition than English content made there, because the Japan angle is the draw. Many creators in Japan run Japanese audio with English captions to reach both.

How to get views and subscribers in Japan
Grow from Japanese audiences
Japanese viewers search in kanji and katakana, watch from 7 to 10 pm JST, and arrive from X as much as from search, so Japanese titles with the right keywords, large colourful thumbnail text, X cross-posting, strict copyright and Golden Week and year-end timing do most of the work.
Titles and keywords in the words Japanese viewers type
Japanese searchers type short keyword strings in kanji and katakana rather than full questions. Put the keywords first, keep titles short, and use the thumbnail for the emotional hook; English channels made in Japan follow Western title rules instead.
YouTube収益化の条件 2026年版【完全解説】
The highest-volume monetization query in Japanese; the year and the bracket signal a complete answer.
新NISAで月3万円積立したら1年でこうなった
A product, a concrete figure and a result-as-story; finance viewers click on numbers.
東京ラーメン おすすめ10選【2026】
Place, dish and a countable ranking: how Japanese food searchers filter.
確定申告のやり方 2026（副業YouTuber向け）
A yearly moment plus the exact audience.
Renting an Apartment in Tokyo as a Foreigner (2026 Costs)
The expat and tourist audience searches in English; the year and the cost promise fit how they search.
日本のコンビニでしか買えないもの
A curiosity hook for the Shorts feed that also travels overseas with captions.
Paste a topic into the YouTube Keyword Generator to see the exact phrases searched from Japan, then write the title with the Video Title Generator.
Thumbnails that work for Japanese viewers
Large colourful Japanese text (four to eight characters), high contrast, and a face or the dish; Japanese thumbnails carry more text than Western ones and viewers expect it. What fails is small text and English on a Japanese channel.
Make the thumbnail in the Thumbnail Maker and run it through the Thumbnail Analyzer, which scores your thumbnail before you upload so you can compare two versions side by side.
Posting time in Japan Standard Time (JST)
Japanese viewing peaks from 7 to 10 pm JST on weekdays, with a second peak on Sunday evenings. South Korea shares the time zone; the US West Coast is 16–17 hours behind and sees a 8 pm JST upload at 4 am, so English channels made in Japan often post in the Japanese morning to reach the US evening. The Best Time to Post tool reads your own channel's viewer activity by hour and day, which beats any general rule once you have a few weeks of data.
Local trends, festivals and sport
Shogatsu, Setsubun, Valentine and White Day, hanami in March and April, Golden Week, the rainy season, Obon in August, Halloween, year-end cleaning and Christmas, and the kakutei shinkoku period from February to March are the reliable spikes. Publish a Golden Week travel video in early April and a kakutei shinkoku video in January so each ranks before the search peak.
Community posts and comments in the audience's language
Cross-post every upload on X with the thumbnail and a one-line hook; Japanese audiences discover channels from X more than in most markets. Community posts with polls keep subscribers between uploads.
Collaborations with Japanese creators at your size
Collaborate with creators at your size in your niche. Two 5,000-subscriber channels appearing in each other's videos each gain a new audience; a shout-out from a million-subscriber channel rarely moves subscribers. Japanese creator communities on X and Discord are where these start.
Playlists and end screens
Group videos into playlists named with the search phrase, not a clever title, so the playlist itself ranks. Put the next video in the series on the end screen; a session that continues on your channel is the strongest signal you can send.
What the algorithm actually rewards
YouTube recommends videos that viewers watch for longer, rate as satisfying in surveys, and come back to. It does not reward upload frequency on its own, tags on their own, or keyword stuffing. Read the plain-language breakdown in the YouTube algorithm guide and check each upload with the Video SEO Checker before it goes live.
YouTube Shorts in Japan
Shorts as a monetization lane for Japanese creators
Shorts in Japan reach the fan-funding tier at 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days and full monetization at 10 million, counted as engaged views; Japanese Shorts travel overseas with captions, which makes the lane realistic for food, travel and curiosity channels.
- 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days for the fan-funding tier; 10 million for full monetization.
- Qualified means engaged views: the viewer stays past the first seconds, and loops are not counted.
- Engaged views sit in YouTube Analytics and run below the dashboard view count.
- From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
- 3,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months for the fan-funding tier; 4,000 for full monetization.
- Public uploads, podcasts and archived live streams count; Shorts watch time does not.
- Hours are checked over a rolling 12 months, so old public videos keep contributing.
- From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days.
A channel qualifies on whichever lane it fills first. Japanese creators have a mid-range long-form RPM and strong Super Chat behaviour, so Shorts are best used to find new viewers at home and abroad and send them to long-form and live streams, while food and curiosity channels can still reach 3 million engaged Shorts views before 3,000 watch hours.
Local Shorts tactics
- Burn Japanese captions into the frame, and add English captions when the topic travels; most Shorts are watched without sound on a train.
- Use only copyright-safe audio; Japanese rights holders claim fast and a claimed Short counts for nothing.
- Three specific hashtags in Japanese beat ten generic ones.
- Cut every long video into two or three Shorts that stand alone, and pin the long-form link in the comment.
- Watch engaged views in Analytics, not the dashboard count; loops and the first seconds do not count toward the 3M and 10M thresholds.
Shorts RPM is far lower than long-form everywhere (third-party benchmarks put it around 0.03–0.15 USD per 1,000 views), so treat Shorts as the lane that builds subscribers and feeds long-form, not as the main earner. Read how Shorts monetization works for the revenue-share rules.
Write hashtags in your audience's language with the Shorts Tags Generator, pick a title with the Shorts Title Generator, see what is rising in Trending Shorts Ideas and score each Short with the Shorts SEO Checker.
YouTube monetization requirements in Japan
Requirements and the 1 February 2027 change
In Japan you can join the YouTube Partner Program at 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified watch hours or 10 million qualified Shorts views; the fan-funding tier at 500 subscribers is also available. From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views.
| Requirement | Fan funding and Shopping (500 subscribers) | Full monetization (1,000 subscribers) |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | 500 | 1,000 |
| Long-form path | 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months | 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months |
| Shorts path | 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days |
| Public uploads | 3 in the last 90 days | Not required |
| Earns from | Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Jewels and gifts, Shopping | Everything in the fan-funding tier plus ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue |
| Both tiers also need | Monetization-policy compliance, YPP availability in the channel's country, no active Community Guidelines strike, 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, one active AdSense for YouTube account | Same |
Thresholds as published on the YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility and Overview of the expanded YouTube Partner Program pages, checked 22 October 2026. Japan appears on the standard YPP availability list, on the expanded (500-subscriber) list, and on the Super Chat and Super Stickers list.
days until the ad-revenue threshold doubles
Apply before 1 February 2027 and your channel is reviewed on 4,000 hours / 10M Shorts views. After that date new applicants need 8,000 hours / 20M Shorts views. The date that matters is when the application reaches YouTube, not when the reviewer decides; review takes about a month and a rejection means a 30-day wait before reapplying, so December is the last month with room for one retry. Announced by YouTube on 10 August 2026 (YouTube blog). The subscriber count and the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier do not change.
What counts as qualified
Counts
- Public long-form videos, including podcasts
- Live streams archived as public videos
- Public Shorts that generate engaged views (the viewer stays past the first seconds; loops do not count)
- Shorts watch time counts only toward the Shorts path, long-form only toward watch hours
Does not count
- Private, unlisted and deleted videos
- Live streams that are not archived
- Views generated while a video or Short is shown as an ad
- Image posts that appear in the Shorts feed
Source: YouTube blog: qualified watch hours and Shorts views. Setting an old video to private removes its hours the same day.
Apply step by step in YouTube Studio

What shortens the path
Actions that add qualified hours and views, not promises
Nothing on this list promises approval. Each item is an action that adds qualified watch time or engaged Shorts views to your channel, and names the tool that performs it.
Fix the ten lowest-scoring videos first
Run SEO Analysis on your weakest uploads and rewrite titles, descriptions and tags where the score flags gaps. Every extra view on an existing public video adds qualified watch time. Tool: SEO Analysis.
Lengthen average view duration before adding uploads
Open Channel Details, sort by average view duration, and study the videos viewers finish. Make the next video in that shape rather than adding more of what people leave. Tool: Channel Details.
Archive every live stream as a public video
A live stream that is not archived adds nothing. Archived public streams count as long-form watch hours.
Hide old uploads only after approval
Setting a video to private removes its watch hours the same day. Clean up embarrassing early videos once the channel is in the program, not before.
Take the Shorts lane if your audience is phone-first
If most of your viewers watch on mobile, 3 million engaged Shorts views in 90 days can arrive before 3,000 watch hours. Watch engaged views, not the dashboard count. Tool: Shorts SEO Checker.
Read the rejection reasons before you apply
Most 2026 rejections cite inauthentic or mass-produced content, reused content with nothing added, misleading titles or thumbnails, or AdSense problems. Check each one against your channel before submitting. Tool: guide to monetization rejections.
How to get paid by YouTube in Japan
Getting paid in yen
AdSense for YouTube pays creators in Japan in yen by EFT to a Japanese bank account or by wire transfer once the balance reaches 8,000 yen; EFT arrives within seven business days of the 21st–26th issue window.
Payment methods available in Japan
| Method | Currency and arrival | Best for and what to expect |
|---|---|---|
| EFT to a Japanese bank | JPY; up to 7 business days after issue (21st–26th) | Almost every creator in Japan. Any ordinary deposit account (普通預金) at a bank such as MUFG, SMBC, Mizuho, Japan Post Bank or an online bank; you enter the bank and branch codes, the account number and the account holder's name in katakana as the bank records it. No fees from AdSense. |
| Wire transfer | JPY; up to 15 business days after issue | Creators with a business account that only accepts SWIFT wires. Expect a possible inbound fee. |
| Check, Hyperwallet | Not listed for Japan | Not available for YouTube payments in Japan on the AdSense country table as of October 2026. |
Methods as listed in the AdSense payment methods by country table for YouTube payments, checked 22 October 2026. Arrival times from Payment timelines for AdSense for YouTube.
EFT in yen is the default to choose. Japan is one of the countries where AdSense lists EFT and a local-currency threshold (8,000 yen), so you are paid in yen straight into a Japanese bank account with no conversion. Payment currency is fixed to the payment address once set.
What the bank asks for: the bank code, the branch code, the account type and number, and the account holder's name in katakana exactly as the bank records it. Online banks accept AdSense credits normally.
Name matching. The AdSense payee name must match the account holder exactly, including the katakana form; a mismatch between the kanji name in AdSense and the katakana name at the bank is the usual reason a Japanese EFT fails. Enter the name the way the bank prints it.
Set up AdSense for YouTube payments step by step
- 1
Reach the payment-method selection threshold
AdSense lets you add a payment method once your balance passes a small verification amount; add it well before you expect to cross the 100 USD (or local-currency equivalent) payment threshold.
- 2
Add an EFT to a Japanese bank account
In AdSense → Payments → Manage payment methods, choose the method and enter the bank code, the branch code, the account type and number, and the account holder's name in katakana exactly as the bank records it. The beneficiary name must match the AdSense payee name exactly.
- 3
Verify your address with the PIN
Google mails a PIN to your Japan postal address once you reach the verification threshold; enter it in AdSense within four months or payments pause.
- 4
Verify your identity
Upload a government-issued ID in the payee's name when AdSense asks; the name on the ID, the AdSense account and the bank account must all match.
- 5
Submit your tax information
Open AdSense → Payments → Manage settings → United States tax info and complete the form the guide selects for you so withholding is applied at the correct rate for your country.
- 6
Watch the monthly timeline
Earnings finalize around the 3rd, payment details lock on the 20th, and payments are issued between the 21st and 26th; track your balance toward the threshold from the Channel Analyzer.
ToolChannel Analyzer
The monthly payment timeline
Common holds and how to clear them
Address verification (PIN)
Google mails a PIN once you reach the verification threshold; enter it in AdSense. If it does not arrive after three requests, use the document-based option.
Identity verification
Upload a government ID that matches the payee name exactly. A mismatch between the AdSense name and the bank account name is the most common wire rejection.
Tax information
Submit the form in AdSense → Payments → Manage settings. Without it, 24% backup withholding applies to worldwide earnings for individuals.
Payment method missing
Add it before the 20th of the month you expect to cross the threshold.
Worked example: a 100 USD payment arriving in Japan
Example only. An 8,000 yen-threshold payment issued on the 24th by EFT typically lands in your Japanese bank account within seven business days with no conversion and no fee, so the amount credited matches the AdSense receipt to the yen. The bank statement line shows Google as the sender; keep it with the receipt for your kakutei shinkoku.

Taxes for YouTube creators in Japan
Tax and legal basics for Japanese creators
YouTube income in Japan is miscellaneous or business income: salaried creators file a kakutei shinkoku once side income exceeds 200,000 yen a year, full-time creators file a kaigyo todoke and can use the blue return, the invoice system affects consumption tax on business-to-business income, and the W-8BEN in AdSense with the Japan–US treaty claim reduces withholding on US-viewer earnings.
Side income or business. For a salaried creator, YouTube income is usually miscellaneous income (雑所得), and a kakutei shinkoku (final tax return) is required once it exceeds 200,000 yen in a year after expenses. A full-time creator files a kaigyo todoke (開業届) to register as a sole proprietor and can elect the blue return (青色申告) for its deductions.
Consumption tax and the invoice system. Consumption tax registration applies above the turnover threshold, and the invoice system (インボイス制度) affects whether business clients can deduct the tax on your brand-deal invoices. AdSense income from Google's overseas entity is treated differently from domestic deals; a tax accountant (税理士) will set this up in your first return.
The form inside AdSense. Submit the W-8BEN as a Japanese individual and claim the Japan–US tax treaty; the treaty reduces the rate on earnings from US viewers below the 30% default, and the exact rate is shown in the AdSense tax tool. Earnings from Japanese and other non-US viewers are not withheld. Without any form, 24% of worldwide earnings is withheld.
Record-keeping. Keep every AdSense receipt and bank statement, plus receipts for equipment, software and a share of home costs; blue-return filers need proper books. The kakutei shinkoku period runs from mid-February to mid-March.
The form inside AdSense is the W-8BEN. Fill it before the first payment so withholding matches your treaty position.

How much YouTube pays in Japan
Realistic earnings for Japanese audiences
Third-party benchmarks put long-form RPM for Japanese audiences at about 3–5 USD per 1,000 views in October 2026, with Shorts at 0.03–0.15 USD; English content made in Japan for overseas viewers is paid at the US, UK and Australian rates of those viewers.
| Scenario | Long-form | Shorts |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark RPM per 1,000 views | 3–5 USD | 0.03–0.15 USD |
| 100,000 views, mostly Japanese audience (illustrative) | about 300–500 USD | about 3–15 USD |
| 100,000 views, mixed audience incl. US/UK (illustrative) | higher, because the US and UK share is paid at 5–12 USD RPM | about 3–15 USD |
Industry estimate, Oct 2026, varies by niche and season. Illustrative rows multiply the benchmark range by views; they are not earnings data from any channel.
RPM is what a creator receives per 1,000 views after YouTube's share; CPM is what advertisers pay. Japanese-audience RPM is mid-range: well above the volume markets and below the US, UK and Germany. Business, finance and travel content attracts the highest-paying ads, games and entertainment the lowest, and a video over eight minutes with mid-roll ads out-earns a short one with the same views. Super Chat revenue is a larger share of income for Japanese live-streaming channels than almost anywhere else.
Audience country matters more than creator country. A creator in Japan whose viewers are mostly in the US, UK, Australia or Canada is paid at those countries' rates, which is why English-language content on Japan travel, food and life in Japan tends to show a higher RPM than local-language content with the same view count.
Shorts are paid from a shared pool and typically show 0.03–0.15 USD RPM. Long-form videos over eight minutes can carry mid-roll ads, which is the single biggest lever on long-form RPM.

More ways to earn in Japan
Income beyond ad revenue
Beyond ad revenue, creators in Japan have memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks available with the fan-funding tier, and Super Chat on live streams is a larger income source in Japan than in most markets; brand deals and affiliate programs that pay in yen add to it.
Memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks
All available to Japanese channels with the fan-funding tier at 500 subscribers, and Japanese audiences are among the most active Super Chat users on the platform. Fans pay in yen; your share arrives through AdSense.
Brand deals with Japanese companies
Cosmetics, food, games and finance brands work with creators, often through agencies. Rates are quoted per video in yen; invoice with the correct consumption tax treatment and keep a media kit with your Channel Analyzer numbers.
Affiliate programs that pay in yen
Amazon Associates Japan, Rakuten Affiliate and A8.net pay to Japanese accounts; disclose paid links in the description and in the video (PR表記).
YouTube Shopping
Tag products from your own store or an affiliate program in videos and Shorts. Available with the fan-funding tier where Shopping is offered.
Brand deals
Brands price deals on views and audience country. Keep a one-page media kit with your Channel Analyzer numbers and quote in your local currency plus USD.
Affiliate links
Programs that pay to local bank accounts avoid a second currency conversion. Disclose paid links in the description and in the video.
Digital products and courses
A template, preset, PDF or course sells to a small audience well before ad revenue is meaningful. Sell through a platform that pays out in your currency.
Japanese creator calendar
Twelve months of local content angles
Twelve recurring Japanese moments, from Shogatsu and the kakutei shinkoku period to Golden Week and Obon, with a content angle for each; prepare the video two weeks before the moment starts.

Mistakes that stall channels in Japan
Mistakes that stall Japanese channels
The patterns that stall Japanese channels are anime and music clips, English titles for a Japanese audience, a katakana name mismatch at the bank, reused content without commentary, fake views from view-selling sites, missing the 200,000 yen filing rule, and hiding old videos before approval. Each has a fix.
Anime, music or TV clips
Japanese rights holders claim within hours and strikes follow. Fix: your own footage, still images with commentary, and Audio Library music only.
English titles for a Japanese audience
Japanese viewers search in kanji and katakana. Fix: Japanese keywords first, English only on an English channel.
Katakana name mismatch at the bank
An EFT to an account whose katakana name differs from the AdSense payee name is returned. Fix: enter the name exactly as the bank prints it.
Reused content without commentary
Reuploads with nothing added are the most common rejection reason. Fix: your own voice, framing and analysis, with permission where needed.
Fake views from view-selling sites
Views from ad campaigns and view services do not count as qualified, and the pattern can get the application rejected. Fix: stop, delete nothing, and let real watch time accumulate.
Missing the 200,000 yen filing rule
Salaried creators must file a kakutei shinkoku once side income passes 200,000 yen; late filing brings penalties. Fix: track AdSense totals from the first payment.
Ignoring Shorts
Food and curiosity channels often reach 3 million engaged Shorts views before 3,000 watch hours. Fix: cut every long video into Shorts with Japanese and English captions.
Hiding old videos before approval
Setting early uploads to private removes their watch hours the same day. Fix: leave them public until the channel is accepted.
Applying with an unverified AdSense account
Address PIN and identity checks unresolved means the review stalls. Fix: clear every AdSense notification before you submit the YPP application.

FAQ
YouTube monetization in Japan: your questions
Short answers that stand on their own. Each restates the country and the number so it reads correctly when quoted alone.
How many subscribers do you need to monetize in Japan?
In Japan you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days for full monetization. The fan-funding tier is also available in Japan at 500 subscribers with 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views plus three public uploads in 90 days.
Does YouTube pay in yen in Japan?
Yes. The AdSense table lists EFT and wire transfer for Japan, and the AdSense threshold page lists JPY at 8,000 yen, so a creator in Japan is paid in yen by EFT straight into a Japanese bank account with no conversion. The payment currency is fixed to the payment address once set, so choose yen deliberately when you add the method.
When does YouTube pay out earnings in Japan?
AdSense finalizes the previous month's earnings around the 3rd, locks payment details on the 20th, and issues payments between the 21st and 26th if the balance on the 20th is at least 8,000 yen. An EFT to a Japanese bank account then arrives within seven business days, so most creators in Japan see the credit before the end of the month; a wire transfer can take up to 15 business days.
How much does YouTube pay in Japan per 1,000 views?
Third-party benchmarks for October 2026 put long-form RPM for Japanese audiences at about 3–5 USD per 1,000 views and Shorts at 0.03–0.15 USD, varying by niche and season. Business, finance and travel content sits at the top of that range, games and entertainment at the bottom, and English content made in Japan for overseas viewers is paid at those viewers' higher rates.
When does YouTube income become taxable in Japan?
For a salaried creator in Japan, YouTube income is usually miscellaneous income and a kakutei shinkoku is required once side income after expenses exceeds 200,000 yen in a year; below that, residence tax may still apply. Full-time creators file a kaigyo todoke and can use the blue return. Google also withholds a treaty-reduced rate on US-viewer earnings after you submit a W-8BEN. This is general information, not tax advice.
Can foreigners in Japan monetize YouTube?
Yes. A foreign resident whose channel country is set to Japan applies under the same thresholds as anyone else, is paid in yen to a Japanese bank account, and files taxes in Japan under the same rules, with the W-8BEN completed as a Japanese tax resident. Check that your residence status permits the activity and the income; some statuses restrict side work, so confirm with immigration or a lawyer first.
How do I receive YouTube earnings in Japan step by step?
Add an EFT in AdSense → Payments → Manage payment methods with your bank code, branch code, account type and number, and the account holder's name in katakana exactly as the bank records it. Verify your address with the mailed PIN, verify your identity if asked, and submit the W-8BEN claiming the Japan–US treaty. Payment is issued between the 21st and 26th once the balance reaches 8,000 yen.
What changes for creators in Japan on 1 February 2027?
From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue, including in Japan, need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, double the current 4,000 hours or 10 million views. The 500-subscriber fan-funding tier does not change, and channels already in the program keep their status.
