How to start a YouTube channel in South Africa
Set the channel up for South African search from day one
Open the channel on your own Google account, set South Africa as the country in Studio, verify with a South African mobile number, and pick the language mix before the name, because a Zulu, Afrikaans or English-first channel reaches three different audiences.
Language mix, decided before the name
English reaches everyone and the diaspora; isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi and Afrikaans content has far less competition. Pick a primary language and let the name reflect it.
Set the channel country to South Africa
Studio → Settings → Channel → Basic info → Country of residence. This is what YouTube checks against the availability lists and what AdSense expects the payment address to match.
2-Step Verification and advanced features
Turn on 2-Step Verification on the Google account, then verify the channel with a South African mobile number (Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom all receive the code) to get advanced features.
A handle that matches every other platform
Short, no numbers, identical on TikTok, Instagram and X; a mismatch loses viewers who find you elsewhere.
Description in the words viewers search
Write it with the phrases people type ("how to make money online South Africa", "Joburg apartment tour", "tax-free savings account explained"), and name the upload days.
First five videos as one series
Five videos on one promise tell YouTube exactly who to show you to. Mixing comedy, finance and vlogs in week one tells it nothing.
Audio first, then camera
A lapel mic and daylight outperform a 4K camera with bad sound; load-shedding schedules decide when you film, so batch-record.
Upload defaults
Set video language to English (South Africa) or the local language, caption language, and the location. Default to public and schedule for 6–9 pm SAST.
Study a channel in your niche with the Channel Analyzer before you pick a name, then draft your first titles with the Video Title Generator. Full setup walkthrough: how to start a YouTube channel.
Best YouTube niche in South Africa
Niches that grow and pay for South African audiences
The niches growing in South Africa in 2026 are personal finance, comedy, amapiano and music reactions, cars, football and rugby, cooking and braai, property, tech, lifestyle and faith content. Earning potential is qualitative and reflects advertiser demand for each topic.
Personal finance
High earning potentialTax-free savings, retirement annuities, debt and side-income explainers draw the highest-paying advertisers in South Africa.
Comedy
Medium earning potentialSouth African humour travels; skits in Zulu, Sotho and Afrikaans build loyal audiences.
Amapiano and music reactions
Medium earning potentialEvery release creates a search spike; global amapiano fans watch South African reactions.
Cars
High earning potentialReviews, running costs and the used-car market; strong motor-brand advertising.
Football and rugby
Medium earning potentialPSL, Bafana and the Springboks are the national conversation; reactions rank within minutes.
Cooking and braai
Medium earning potentialBraai, potjie and township food content ranks at home and with the diaspora.
Property
High earning potentialBuying, renting and the Joburg and Cape Town markets; high intent and bond advertisers.
Tech and fintech
High earning potentialPhones, fibre, load-shedding solutions and banking apps pull high-intent viewers.
Lifestyle and township vlogs
Low earning potentialDaily life from Soweto to Khayelitsha has loyal viewers and strong brand-deal demand.
Faith and motivation
Low earning potentialLarge, loyal audience with long sessions and strong Super Thanks behaviour.
Earning potential is qualitative (Low / Medium / High) and reflects advertiser demand and audience country, not a figure any channel will earn.
Saturated locally: generic reaction channels without commentary, celebrity gossip reuploaded from TikTok and "make money online" channels without a product. The videos are interchangeable, so watch time stays low.
Low local competition: local-language explainers of SARS, UIF, NSFAS and SASSA, trade skills with a camera on the work, load-shedding and solar how-tos, and regional content outside Gauteng and the Western Cape.
Local audience or global audience? South Africa already has the highest-RPM audience in Africa, and English content also reaches the UK, Australia and US diaspora at even higher rates. Local-language content grows faster inside the country with far less competition. Many channels run English titles with local-language delivery.

How to get views and subscribers in South Africa
Grow from South African audiences
South African viewers search in English with local-language hooks, watch from 6 to 9 pm SAST around load-shedding, and share through WhatsApp, so English search phrases, local-language thumbnail text, PSL and Springbok timing and batch-recorded uploads do most of the work.
Titles and keywords in the words South African viewers type
South Africans search in English and click on local-language hooks. Put the search phrase first, keep titles under 60 characters so they survive a WhatsApp preview, and let the thumbnail carry the Zulu, Afrikaans or Sotho hook.

Tax-Free Savings Account: What R500 a Month Becomes

Joburg Apartment Tour: What R8,000 Gets You in 2026
City, type and a Rand figure.
Springboks vs All Blacks: Instant Reaction from Ellis Park
Match and venue for search, reaction for the click.
Izinto ezenzeka eGoli kuphela
Local language for the Shorts feed, where the hook delivers the view.
Paste a topic into the YouTube Keyword Generator to see the exact phrases searched from South Africa, then write the title with the Video Title Generator.
Thumbnails that work for South African viewers
Faces with a clear expression, three words of text that add to the title, and colours that survive a phone screen in sunlight. Local-language text on the thumbnail with an English title works; clutter and English-only everything does not.
Make the thumbnail in the Thumbnail Maker and run it through the Thumbnail Analyzer, which scores your thumbnail before you upload so you can compare two versions side by side.
Posting time in South Africa Standard Time (SAST)
South African viewing peaks from 6 to 9 pm SAST on weekdays, with a second peak on Sunday afternoons; load-shedding stages shift it, so check the Best Time to Post tool monthly. The UK is one or two hours behind; a 7 pm SAST upload also catches the UK evening. The Best Time to Post tool reads your own channel's viewer activity by hour and day, which beats any general rule once you have a few weeks of data.
Local trends, festivals and sport
Back to school in January, the Budget Speech in February, Easter, Freedom Day on 27 April, Youth Day on 16 June, the Springbok season, Heritage Day and Braai Day on 24 September, Black Friday, matric results in January and the December festive season are the reliable spikes. Publish a Braai Day video two weeks early so it ranks before the peak.
Community posts and comments in the audience's language
Reply in the language the comment used. Community posts in isiZulu or Afrikaans get more replies than English announcements; polls about the next topic keep viewers between uploads.
Collaborations with South African creators at your size
Collaborate with creators at your size in Joburg, Cape Town or Durban. Two 5,000-subscriber channels swapping appearances each gain a new audience; creator WhatsApp groups and Discords are where these start.
Playlists and end screens
Group videos into playlists named with the search phrase, not a clever title, so the playlist itself ranks. Put the next video in the series on the end screen; a session that continues on your channel is the strongest signal you can send.
What the algorithm actually rewards
YouTube recommends videos that viewers watch for longer, rate as satisfying in surveys, and come back to. It does not reward upload frequency on its own, tags on their own, or keyword stuffing. Read the plain-language breakdown in the YouTube algorithm guide and check each upload with the Video SEO Checker before it goes live.
YouTube Shorts in South Africa
Shorts as a monetization lane for South African creators
Shorts in South Africa reach the fan-funding tier at 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days and full monetization at 10 million, counted as engaged views; the phone-first, TikTok-trained audience makes the Shorts lane realistic for comedy, music and sport channels.
- 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days for the fan-funding tier; 10 million for full monetization.
- Qualified means engaged views: the viewer stays past the first seconds, and loops are not counted.
- Engaged views sit in YouTube Analytics and run below the dashboard view count.
- From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
- 3,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months for the fan-funding tier; 4,000 for full monetization.
- Public uploads, podcasts and archived live streams count; Shorts watch time does not.
- Hours are checked over a rolling 12 months, so old public videos keep contributing.
- From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days.
A channel qualifies on whichever lane it fills first. South African audiences are mobile-first and data-conscious, so comedy, amapiano and sport channels often reach 3 million engaged Shorts views before 3,000 watch hours; long-form still carries almost all of the ad revenue.
Local Shorts tactics
- Burn captions into the frame; most Shorts are watched without sound in a taxi.
- Use trending amapiano and gqom sounds within the first week; the audio page is a discovery surface.
- Hashtags in English plus one local-language tag (#mzansi #amapiano #joburg) rather than ten generic ones.
- Keep file sizes small and audio clear; data is expensive and a Short that buffers is swiped away before it counts.
- Post Shorts daily during the PSL season and December, and point each one at a long-form video in the pinned comment.
Shorts RPM is far lower than long-form everywhere (third-party benchmarks put it around 0.03–0.15 USD per 1,000 views), so treat Shorts as the lane that builds subscribers and feeds long-form, not as the main earner. Read how Shorts monetization works for the revenue-share rules.
Write hashtags in your audience's language with the Shorts Tags Generator, pick a title with the Shorts Title Generator, see what is rising in Trending Shorts Ideas and score each Short with the Shorts SEO Checker.
YouTube monetization requirements in South Africa
Requirements and the 1 February 2027 change
In South Africa you can join the YouTube Partner Program at 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified watch hours or 10 million qualified Shorts views; the fan-funding tier at 500 subscribers is also available. From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views.
| Requirement | Fan funding and Shopping (500 subscribers) | Full monetization (1,000 subscribers) |
|---|---|---|
| Subscribers | 500 | 1,000 |
| Long-form path | 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months | 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months |
| Shorts path | 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days |
| Public uploads | 3 in the last 90 days | Not required |
| Earns from | Memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Jewels and gifts, Shopping | Everything in the fan-funding tier plus ad revenue and YouTube Premium revenue |
| Both tiers also need | Monetization-policy compliance, YPP availability in the channel's country, no active Community Guidelines strike, 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, one active AdSense for YouTube account | Same |
Thresholds as published on the YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility and Overview of the expanded YouTube Partner Program pages, checked 22 October 2026. South Africa appears on the standard YPP availability list, on the expanded (500-subscriber) list, and on the Super Chat and Super Stickers list.
days until the ad-revenue threshold doubles
Apply before 1 February 2027 and your channel is reviewed on 4,000 hours / 10M Shorts views. After that date new applicants need 8,000 hours / 20M Shorts views. The date that matters is when the application reaches YouTube, not when the reviewer decides; review takes about a month and a rejection means a 30-day wait before reapplying, so December is the last month with room for one retry. Announced by YouTube on 10 August 2026 (YouTube blog). The subscriber count and the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier do not change.
What counts as qualified
Counts
- Public long-form videos, including podcasts
- Live streams archived as public videos
- Public Shorts that generate engaged views (the viewer stays past the first seconds; loops do not count)
- Shorts watch time counts only toward the Shorts path, long-form only toward watch hours
Does not count
- Private, unlisted and deleted videos
- Live streams that are not archived
- Views generated while a video or Short is shown as an ad
- Image posts that appear in the Shorts feed
Source: YouTube blog: qualified watch hours and Shorts views. Setting an old video to private removes its hours the same day.
Apply step by step in YouTube Studio
Check in 30 seconds whether you already meet a tier. Track subscribers, qualified watch hours and engaged Shorts views toward both thresholds in the Channel Analyzer; get the full requirements breakdown in the YouTube monetization guide and the 4,000 watch hours guide.
What shortens the path
Actions that add qualified hours and views, not promises
Nothing on this list promises approval. Each item is an action that adds qualified watch time or engaged Shorts views to your channel, and names the tool that performs it.
Fix the ten lowest-scoring videos first
Run SEO Analysis on your weakest uploads and rewrite titles, descriptions and tags where the score flags gaps. Every extra view on an existing public video adds qualified watch time. Tool: SEO Analysis.
Lengthen average view duration before adding uploads
Open Channel Details, sort by average view duration, and study the videos viewers finish. Make the next video in that shape rather than adding more of what people leave. Tool: Channel Details.
Archive every live stream as a public video
A live stream that is not archived adds nothing. Archived public streams count as long-form watch hours.
Hide old uploads only after approval
Setting a video to private removes its watch hours the same day. Clean up embarrassing early videos once the channel is in the program, not before.
Take the Shorts lane if your audience is phone-first
If most of your viewers watch on mobile, 3 million engaged Shorts views in 90 days can arrive before 3,000 watch hours. Watch engaged views, not the dashboard count. Tool: Shorts SEO Checker.
Read the rejection reasons before you apply
Most 2026 rejections cite inauthentic or mass-produced content, reused content with nothing added, misleading titles or thumbnails, or AdSense problems. Check each one against your channel before submitting. Tool: guide to monetization rejections.
How to get paid by YouTube in South Africa
Getting paid in Rand
AdSense for YouTube pays South African creators in Rand by EFT to a South African bank account once the balance reaches R1,000; EFT arrives within seven business days of the 21st–26th issue window.
Payment methods available in South Africa
| Method | Currency and arrival | Best for and what to expect |
|---|---|---|
| EFT to a South African bank | ZAR; up to 7 business days after issue (21st–26th) | Almost every South African creator. Any FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec or TymeBank account; you enter the branch code, account number and account holder's name. No fees from AdSense. |
| Wire transfer | Listed for AdSense generally but not for YouTube payments in South Africa | The AdSense country table shows EFT only in the YouTube column for South Africa as of October 2026. |
| Check, Hyperwallet | Not listed for South Africa | Not available for YouTube payments in South Africa on the AdSense country table as of October 2026. |
Methods as listed in the AdSense payment methods by country table for YouTube payments, checked 22 October 2026. Arrival times from Payment timelines for AdSense for YouTube.
EFT in Rand is the default to choose. South Africa is one of the countries where AdSense lists EFT and a local-currency threshold (R1,000), so you are paid in Rand straight into a local account with no conversion at your bank. Payment currency is fixed to the payment address once set.
What the bank asks for: the universal branch code, the account number, the account type and the account holder's name exactly as the bank prints it. For a sole proprietor that is your own name; for a Pty Ltd the AdSense payee and the account should both be the company.
Balance-of-payments declarations. Inbound foreign payments can trigger a BoP reporting question from the bank; AdSense income is usually recorded as services income. Your bank or accountant can confirm the category.
Set up AdSense for YouTube payments step by step
- 1
Reach the payment-method selection threshold
AdSense lets you add a payment method once your balance passes a small verification amount; add it well before you expect to cross the payment threshold for your currency.
- 2
Add an EFT to a South African bank account
In AdSense → Payments → Manage payment methods, choose the method and enter the branch code, the account number, the account type, and the account holder's name exactly as the bank prints it. The beneficiary name must match the AdSense payee name exactly.
- 3
Verify your address with the PIN
Google mails a PIN to your South Africa postal address once you reach the verification threshold; enter it in AdSense within four months or payments pause.
- 4
Verify your identity
Upload a government-issued ID in the payee's name when AdSense asks; the name on the ID, the AdSense account and the bank account must all match.
- 5
Submit your tax information
Open AdSense → Payments → Manage settings → United States tax info and complete the form the guide selects for you so withholding is applied at the correct rate for your country.
- 6
Watch the monthly timeline
Earnings finalize around the 3rd, payment details lock on the 20th, and payments are issued between the 21st and 26th; track your balance toward the threshold from the Channel Analyzer.
ToolChannel Analyzer
The monthly payment timeline
Common holds and how to clear them
Address verification (PIN)
Google mails a PIN once you reach the verification threshold; enter it in AdSense. If it does not arrive after three requests, use the document-based option.
Identity verification
Upload a government ID that matches the payee name exactly. A mismatch between the AdSense name and the bank account name is the most common wire rejection.
Tax information
Submit the form in AdSense → Payments → Manage settings. Without it, 24% backup withholding applies to worldwide earnings for individuals.
Payment method missing
Add it before the 20th of the month you expect to cross the threshold.
Worked example: a 100 USD payment arriving in South Africa
Example only. An R1,000-threshold payment issued on the 24th by EFT typically lands in your South African account within seven business days with no conversion and no fee, so the amount credited matches the AdSense receipt. If the bank asks for a balance-of-payments category, choose the services category your accountant confirms. Keep the statement line with the receipt for SARS.

Taxes for YouTube creators in South Africa
Tax and legal basics for South African creators
YouTube income in South Africa is taxable income declared to SARS, creators whose income is not subject to PAYE register as provisional taxpayers and pay twice a year, VAT registration applies above the compulsory threshold, and the W-8BEN in AdSense with the South Africa–US treaty claim reduces withholding on US-viewer earnings.
How it is classified. AdSense income is trade income, declared on your annual ITR12 return. Once it becomes a regular income not covered by PAYE, you register as a provisional taxpayer and make two provisional payments a year with a possible top-up.
VAT. VAT registration becomes compulsory once taxable supplies pass the threshold set by SARS. AdSense income from Google's overseas entity is generally a zero-rated export of services; brand deals with South African companies are standard-rated. An accountant sets this up in your first return.
The form inside AdSense. Submit the W-8BEN as a South African individual and claim the South Africa–US tax treaty; the treaty reduces the rate on earnings from US viewers below the 30% default, and the exact rate is shown in the AdSense tax tool. Earnings from South African and other non-US viewers are not withheld. Without any form, 24% of worldwide earnings is withheld.
Record-keeping. Keep every AdSense receipt and bank statement, plus receipts for equipment, software, data and a share of home costs; SARS expects records kept for five years.
The form inside AdSense is the W-8BEN. Fill it before the first payment so withholding matches your treaty position.

How much YouTube pays in South Africa
Realistic earnings for South African audiences
Third-party benchmarks put long-form RPM for South African audiences at about 1–3 USD per 1,000 views in October 2026, the highest in Africa, with Shorts at 0.03–0.15 USD; finance, property and tech sit at the top of the range and comedy at the bottom.
| Scenario | Long-form | Shorts |
|---|---|---|
| Benchmark RPM per 1,000 views | 1–3 USD | 0.03–0.15 USD |
| 100,000 views, mostly South African audience (illustrative) | about 100–300 USD | about 3–15 USD |
| 100,000 views, mixed audience incl. US/UK (illustrative) | higher, because the US and UK share is paid at 5–12 USD RPM | about 3–15 USD |
Industry estimate, Oct 2026, varies by niche and season. Illustrative rows multiply the benchmark range by views; they are not earnings data from any channel.
RPM is what a creator receives per 1,000 views after YouTube's share; CPM is what advertisers pay. South African-audience RPM sits between the volume markets and the high-RPM markets because South Africa has a developed advertiser base for banking, insurance, telecoms and retail. Finance, property and tech content attracts the highest-paying ads, comedy and vlogs the lowest, and a video over eight minutes with mid-roll ads out-earns a short one with the same views.
Audience country matters more than creator country. A creator in South Africa whose viewers are mostly in the US, UK, Australia or Canada is paid at those countries' rates, which is why English-language content on South African travel, music and finance tends to show a higher RPM than local-language content with the same view count.
Shorts are paid from a shared pool and typically show 0.03–0.15 USD RPM. Long-form videos over eight minutes can carry mid-roll ads, which is the single biggest lever on long-form RPM.
Compare South Africa with other markets in the YouTube RPM by country guide and by topic in YouTube RPM by niche; earn before ad revenue with the ideas in how to make money on YouTube without monetization.
More ways to earn in South Africa
Income beyond ad revenue
Beyond ad revenue, South African creators have memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks and Shopping available with the fan-funding tier, and brand deals with South African companies and affiliate programs that pay in Rand usually out-earn AdSense for channels under a million views a month.
Memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks
South Africa is on the Super Chat and Super Stickers list, and memberships come with the fan-funding tier at 500 subscribers. Fans pay in Rand through Google Play billing; your share arrives through AdSense.
Brand deals with South African companies
Banks, insurers, telecoms, retailers and car brands spend heavily on creators. Rates are quoted per video in Rand; invoice with the correct VAT treatment and keep a media kit with your Channel Analyzer numbers.
Affiliate programs that pay in Rand
Takealot, Superbalist and bank referral programs pay to South African accounts with no conversion; Black Friday is the peak.
YouTube Shopping
Tag products from your own store or an affiliate program in videos and Shorts. Available with the fan-funding tier where Shopping is offered.
Brand deals
Brands price deals on views and audience country. Keep a one-page media kit with your Channel Analyzer numbers and quote in your local currency plus USD.
Affiliate links
Programs that pay to local bank accounts avoid a second currency conversion. Disclose paid links in the description and in the video.
Digital products and courses
A template, preset, PDF or course sells to a small audience well before ad revenue is meaningful. Sell through a platform that pays out in your currency.

Mistakes that stall channels in South Africa
Mistakes that stall South African channels
The patterns that stall South African channels are reuploaded PSL and Springbok footage, reaction content without commentary, three niches on one channel, ignoring load-shedding in the upload schedule, treating the income as untaxed, and hiding old videos before approval. Each has a fix.
Reuploading PSL or Springbok footage
Broadcasters claim it within hours and the channel collects strikes. Fix: react to the moment with your own camera and voice instead of showing the broadcast.
Reaction content without commentary
Reused content with nothing added is the most common rejection reason. Fix: your own analysis and framing, with permission where needed.
Three niches on one channel
A skit, a finance explainer and a vlog teach YouTube nothing about who to recommend you to. Fix: one niche for the first 30 videos.
Letting load-shedding break the schedule
Missed uploads lose the audience faster than a mediocre video. Fix: batch-record and schedule uploads in Studio.
Treating AdSense income as untaxed
SARS receives foreign-payment data from banks. Fix: declare it, register as a provisional taxpayer once it is regular, and keep records.
Ignoring Shorts
Comedy, music and sport channels often reach 3 million engaged Shorts views before 3,000 watch hours. Fix: cut every long video into Shorts with captions.
Fake views from view-selling sites
Views from ad campaigns and view services do not count as qualified, and the pattern can get the application rejected. Fix: stop, delete nothing, and let real watch time accumulate.
Hiding old videos before approval
Setting early uploads to private removes their watch hours the same day. Fix: leave them public until the channel is accepted.
Applying with an unverified AdSense account
Address PIN and identity checks unresolved means the review stalls. Fix: clear every AdSense notification before you submit the YPP application.

FAQ
YouTube monetization in South Africa: your questions
Short answers that stand on their own. Each restates the country and the number so it reads correctly when quoted alone.
How many subscribers do you need to get monetised on YouTube in South Africa?
In South Africa you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days for full monetization. The fan-funding tier is also available in South Africa at 500 subscribers with 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views plus three public uploads in 90 days.
Does YouTube pay in Rand in South Africa?
Yes. The AdSense table lists EFT as the only method for YouTube payments in South Africa, and the AdSense threshold page lists ZAR at R1,000, so a South African creator is paid in Rand by EFT straight into a local account with no conversion. The payment currency is fixed to the payment address once set, so choose Rand deliberately when you add the method.
When does YouTube pay in South Africa?
AdSense finalises the previous month's earnings around the 3rd, locks payment details on the 20th, and issues payments between the 21st and 26th if the balance on the 20th is at least R1,000. An EFT to a South African bank account then arrives within seven business days, so most creators see the credit before the end of the month.
How much does YouTube pay in South Africa per 1,000 views?
Third-party benchmarks for October 2026 put long-form RPM for South African audiences at about 1–3 USD per 1,000 views, the highest in Africa, and Shorts at 0.03–0.15 USD, varying by niche and season. Finance, property and tech content sits at the top of that range, comedy and vlogs at the bottom, and viewers in the UK or US are paid at higher rates still.
Do I pay tax on YouTube income in South Africa?
Yes. YouTube income earned by a creator living in South Africa is trade income declared to SARS on the annual return, and once it is regular income not covered by PAYE you register as a provisional taxpayer and pay twice a year. VAT applies above the compulsory threshold. Google also withholds a treaty-reduced rate on US-viewer earnings after you submit a W-8BEN. This is general information, not tax advice.
How do I get paid by YouTube in South Africa step by step?
Add an EFT in AdSense → Payments → Manage payment methods with your branch code, account number, account type and the account holder's name exactly as the bank prints it. Verify your address with the mailed PIN, verify your identity if asked, and submit the W-8BEN claiming the South Africa–US treaty. Payment is issued between the 21st and 26th once the balance reaches R1,000.
Is Super Chat available in South Africa?
Yes. South Africa is on YouTube's Super Chat and Super Stickers availability list and on the expanded YouTube Partner Program list, so channels set to South Africa can turn on memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and Shopping at the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier. Fans pay in Rand through Google Play billing; your share arrives through AdSense.
What changes for creators in South Africa on 1 February 2027?
From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue anywhere, including South Africa, need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, double the current 4,000 hours or 10 million views. The 500-subscriber fan-funding tier does not change, and channels already in the program keep their status.
