Apply before 1 February 2027: the last window at 4,000 hours
On 1 February 2027 YouTube doubles the ad-revenue threshold for new applicants to 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views. Everything submitted before then is judged on today's 4,000 hours or 10 million views. This page is the countdown, the two roads, and a sprint plan built from your own numbers.
Platform facts verified 22 October 2026 against YouTube and AdSense Help · Updated when the rules change
Until 00:00 UTC on 1 February 2027. Applications that reach YouTube before then are reviewed on 4,000 hours / 10M Shorts views. Announced 10 August 2026 (YouTube blog).
The two roads
Same channel, two very different Februarys
Nothing about the subscriber count changes. What changes is how much watch time or how many Shorts views a new applicant needs. Here is the fork.
1,000 subscribers + 4,000 hours or 10M Shorts views
- Reviewed on today's thresholds even if the decision arrives after the cutoff.
- Review takes about a month; a rejection means a 30-day wait, so submit by early December for one retry.
- Once approved you keep your status; existing partners are not affected by the doubling.
1,000 subscribers + 8,000 hours or 20M Shorts views
- Twice the watch time, counted over 365 days instead of 12 months.
- Twice the Shorts views in the same 90-day window.
- The fan-funding tier at 500 subscribers stays as it is, so it becomes the realistic first milestone for most new channels.
8,000 watch hours plan if this is your road.

Your 90-day sprint
Turn the gap into a weekly number
Enter today's numbers. The plan divides the gap by the weeks left minus six (one month of review plus a safety margin) so you submit with room for a retry.
6 weeks of growth, then submit. That leaves about six weeks for review and one retry before 31 January 2027.
2,800 hours to go. About 67 hours a day, which is roughly 800 viewers a day watching five minutes.
The 4,000-hour playbook →9,700,000 views to go. Engaged views exclude loops and the first seconds, so read the Analytics figure, not the dashboard.
The 10M Shorts views playbook →Subscribers: 300 to go, about 50 a week. The first 1,000 subscribers guide is built for exactly this.

FAQ
Questions creators ask
What exactly changes on 1 February 2027?
From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, double today's 4,000 hours or 10 million views. YouTube announced it on 10 August 2026. The 500-subscriber fan-funding tier does not change, and channels already in the program keep their status.
If I apply in January, which thresholds am I judged on?
The thresholds in force when your application reaches YouTube. An application submitted before the cutoff is reviewed on 4,000 hours or 10 million Shorts views even if the decision arrives after 1 February 2027. Review takes about a month, and a rejection means a 30-day wait before you can reapply, so December is the last month that leaves room for one retry inside the window.
What happens if I am rejected in January 2027?
You can appeal within 21 days (decision in about 14 days) or reapply after 30 days, which lands after the cutoff, so the reapplication is judged on the new 8,000-hour or 20-million-view thresholds. That is why this page recommends applying by early December: one rejection and a 30-day wait still fit before 31 January 2027.
Does the deadline affect channels that are already monetized?
No. Channels already in the YouTube Partner Program keep their status and keep earning from long-form content. YouTube has said existing partners will review and sign updated terms in Studio; the Shorts revenue-share eligibility also moves to 10 million qualified Shorts views in the trailing 90 days from the same date, and a channel below it keeps its long-form earnings and resumes Shorts revenue when it crosses the line again.
Is it realistic to get 4,000 watch hours in 90 days?
For a channel that already has public videos and some audience, often yes: 4,000 hours over 90 days is about 44 hours a day, which is 530 viewers a day watching five minutes. The sprint plan on this page breaks it into weekly targets from your current numbers, and the 4,000 watch hours guide shows the video formats that add the most qualified time. Starting from zero with no uploads, the honest answer is that the Shorts lane or the fan-funding tier is usually the first milestone.
Does the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier change too?
No. The fan-funding tier stays at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 qualified watch hours or 3 million qualified Shorts views, and it still gives access to memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks and Shopping where the tier is available in your country. If full monetization is out of reach before the cutoff, the fan-funding tier is a realistic first milestone and nothing about it doubles.
