The 2027 threshold
8,000 watch hours: the plan for YouTube's 2027 threshold
From 1 February 2027, new applicants for ad revenue need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days (or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days). If you cannot reach 4,000 hours in the 90 days left, this is the plan to build for: what counts, the daily maths at your own view duration, and a twelve-month route built on retention rather than upload count.

What changed
Before and after 1 February 2027
Only the watch-time and Shorts-view numbers for new ad-revenue applicants move. Subscribers, the fan-funding tier and existing partners are untouched.

|---|---|---|
| Subscribers (full monetization) | 1,000 | 1,000 (unchanged) |

The maths
8,000 hours is 22 hours a day
Here is what that looks like at different average view durations. The calculator turns it into your own number.
| Average view duration | Views needed per day | Views needed per year |
|---|---|---|
| 3 minutes | about 440 | about 160,000 |
| 5 minutes | about 260 | about 96,000 |
| 8 minutes | about 165 | about 60,000 |
| 12 minutes | about 110 | about 40,000 |
| 20 minutes (podcast, archived stream) | about 66 | about 24,000 |
Illustrative arithmetic: 8,000 hours × 60 ÷ average view duration ÷ 365. Qualified hours only; Shorts watch time never counts.
The table says the thing most creators learn late: doubling average view duration halves the views you need. A channel averaging three minutes needs four times the daily views of one averaging twelve. That is why this plan spends its first month on retention of videos that already exist, not on new uploads.

What wastes a year
Six ways channels miss 8,000
Each one is common, and each one has a fix.
Counting Shorts time
Shorts watch time never counts toward the long-form lane. Track the two lanes separately.
Uploading more instead of better
Three videos viewers leave at 20% add less than one they finish. Retention first.
Hiding old videos
Private removes hours the same day. Leave them public until approval.
Unarchived live streams
A stream that is not saved as public adds nothing. Archive every one.
Views from ad campaigns
They never count, and the pattern can get the application rejected.
Reused content
Clips with nothing added are the most common rejection reason. Your voice, your framing.
FAQ
Questions creators ask
When does the 8,000 watch hours requirement start?
On 1 February 2027. YouTube announced on 10 August 2026 that new applicants for ad revenue will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, replacing today's 4,000 hours in 12 months or 10 million views. Applications that reach YouTube before the cutoff are reviewed on the current thresholds.
Is 8,000 watch hours in 365 days harder than 4,000 in 12 months?
Yes, it is double, and the window is effectively the same length. 8,000 hours over a year is about 22 hours a day, which is roughly 260 viewers a day each watching five minutes, or 130 viewers watching ten. The maths section on this page shows the daily number at your own average view duration, and the plan is built around videos viewers finish rather than more uploads.
Does the 8,000-hour rule apply to channels already monetized?
No. Channels already in the YouTube Partner Program keep their status and keep earning from long-form content. YouTube has said existing partners will review and sign updated terms in Studio. The 8,000 hours and 20 million Shorts views thresholds apply to new applicants for ad revenue from 1 February 2027; the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier does not change.
What counts as a qualified watch hour?
Public watch time on long-form videos, including podcasts and live streams archived as public videos, counted over the trailing window. Private, unlisted and deleted videos, live streams that were not archived, Shorts watch time, and time generated while the video was shown as an ad do not count. Setting an old video to private removes its hours the same day, so clean up only after approval.
Should I try for 4,000 hours now or plan for 8,000?
If you can reach 4,000 qualified hours and 1,000 subscribers and submit by early December 2026, do that; review takes about a month and a rejection means a 30-day wait, so December is the last month with room for a retry. If the gap is too large for the time left, plan for the 2027 thresholds from the start and treat the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier as the first milestone.
What is the fastest way to add qualified watch hours?
Longer average view duration on videos that already get views beats more uploads. Fix the ten public videos with the lowest average view duration (titles, thumbnails, the first 30 seconds), archive every live stream as public, make long-form over eight minutes in the shape viewers finish, and use playlists and end screens so one view becomes a session. None of this promises approval; it adds hours to a channel that exists.
