YouTube watch hours calculator: how many videos to 4,000 or 8,000 hours
Three numbers from YouTube Studio tell you the fourth: at your average view duration and typical views, how many long-form videos and how many weeks it takes to reach 4,000 qualified watch hours today or 8,000 from 1 February 2027, and how much the number drops if viewers stay a little longer.
Platform facts verified 22 October 2026 against YouTube and AdSense Help · Updated when the rules change
You need 3,100 more qualified hours, which is 41,334 more long-form views at a 4.5-minute average view duration.
If average view duration rose from 4.5 to 6.8 minutes, the same views would need 19 videos instead of 28. That is usually the cheapest hour on YouTube: fix the first 30 seconds and the thumbnails of the videos you already have before adding uploads.
Arithmetic only: views × average view duration ÷ 60. Qualified-hour rules from the YouTube blog on qualified watch hours, thresholds from the YPP eligibility page, checked 22 October 2026. Eligibility is not approval.
Behind the number
Three things that change the answer
The calculator is simple on purpose. These are the levers that move it.
Average view duration
Halve the views you need by doubling how long viewers stay. One idea per video, the payoff promised in the first line, no two-minute intro.
Video length over eight minutes
Longer videos can hold longer and, once monetized, carry mid-roll ads. A ten-minute video viewers finish is worth three three-minute ones.
Sessions, not views
Playlists named with the search phrase and end screens to the next video turn one view into forty minutes. Archived live streams count too.
Two reminders. Shorts watch time never counts here; it belongs to the Shorts lane. And setting old videos to private removes their hours the same day, so clean up after approval, not before. The full requirements, including the 2027 change, are in the YouTube monetization guide.
FAQ
Questions creators ask
How do you calculate YouTube watch hours?
Watch hours are total minutes watched divided by 60. For one video, multiply views by average view duration in minutes and divide by 60; a video with 2,000 views at a five-minute average view duration is about 167 hours. The calculator does this for your typical video, subtracts the hours you already have, and shows how many videos and weeks you need at your upload rate.
How many views do you need for 4,000 watch hours?
It depends entirely on average view duration. At a five-minute average, 4,000 hours is 48,000 views; at ten minutes it is 24,000; at three minutes it is 80,000. That is why the fastest route to 4,000 hours is usually longer average view duration on videos that already get views, not more uploads. Enter your own duration above to see your number.
Do Shorts count toward watch hours?
No. Shorts watch time never counts toward the 4,000 or 8,000 qualified watch hours; it counts only toward the separate Shorts lane of 10 million (20 million from 1 February 2027) qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Enter only long-form figures in this calculator, and use the 10 million Shorts views plan for the other lane.
What counts as a qualified watch hour?
Public watch time on long-form videos, including podcasts and live streams archived as public videos, over the trailing 12 months (365 days from 1 February 2027). Private, unlisted and deleted videos, unarchived streams, Shorts watch time and time generated while the video ran as an ad do not count. Setting an old video to private removes its hours the same day.
How many watch hours do I need in 2027?
From 1 February 2027 new applicants for ad revenue need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days plus 1,000 subscribers, double today's 4,000. The calculator has a target switch for both. If you can reach 4,000 hours and submit by early December 2026, the application is reviewed on the current threshold; otherwise plan for 8,000 and treat the 500-subscriber fan-funding tier as the first milestone.
Where do I find my average view duration and current watch hours?
In YouTube Studio → Analytics → Overview you see watch time for the selected period; set the period to the last 365 days and filter to public videos for the qualified figure. Average view duration is in the Content tab per video and in the channel overview. The YouSEO Channel Analyzer shows both against the thresholds after you link your channel, with no manual entry.
Is this calculator a guarantee of monetization?
No. It is arithmetic: hours per video at your average view duration, multiplied by videos, compared with the threshold. Reaching the number makes you eligible to apply; YouTube then reviews the channel against its monetization policies, and most rejections cite reused or inauthentic content, misleading metadata or AdSense problems. The rejection reasons guide lists each one with the fix.
